REPORT FROM RECENT PATIENT SURVEYS - MARCH 2012

  1. We have had a Patient Participation Group for many years “Friends of Southmead”. We decided to set up a Virtual Patient Participation Group in November 2011.  We advertised this on notice boards within the surgery, on our website and in the local chemists.  Receptionists and clinical staff gave out invitations to all patients they came in contact with.  This was to ensure that a representative group had been achieved.

Once we had established the group we emailed a survey focusing on main patient experiences, including premises, wait times and patient experiences.

  1. It appeared that although patients were happy with their visits, any comments they made concerned the appointments system and therefore requested that this was looked at in more detail.  The following email was sent out and a second survey was sent focusing on this.

Many thanks to everybody who completed & returned the patient survey questionnaire and to those of you who attached additional comments.

Based on the above, we have identified that the first thing we need to address is our appointment system.  Please can I ask you to complete the attached form and return it to me as soon as possible.  We will then hold a discussion on the findings.

  1. Results of survey:

  • Given a choice of early morning, evening or lunchtime appointments most patients have requested early morning.

  • Over half the patients would find it useful to have a Duty Doctor each day seeing 5 minute booked emergency appointments.

  • Half of the surveyed patients would like to have more telephone consultations available.

  • 75% of patients did not know they could book an appointment using the internet.

  • We asked if an Open Surgery, where patients just came down & waited, would be useful.  Half the patients have said this would be useful.

  1. The results of the survey were emailed to all members of the PRG with an invitation to make any comments.  We agreed to implement having an Open Surgery as a priority change in service and offer more timetabled telephone consultations

  1. Our action plan was agreed:

Given a choice of early morning, evening or lunchtime appointments most patients have requested early morning appointments

We will continue to offer our extended hours at this end of the day

Half of the surveyed patients would like more telephone consultations available

Six slots to be added to the end of each surgery

75% of patients did not realize they could book an appointment via the internet

Readvertising of internet booking – poster in waiting room & local chemist, leaflets at reception

Half the patients said that an Open Surgery would be useful

Immediate implementation of an Open Surgery on Monday mornings

Over half the patients would find it useful to have a Duty Doctor each day seeing 5 minute booked emergency appointments

Consideration of a Duty Doctor in 3 months time.
